    The RHRC Consortium's "GBV Initiative" aimed to produce qualitative and quantitative research on GBV in conflict-affected countries in Asia, Europe, and Africa. The Initiative produced assessment, monitoring, and evaluation tools designed to assist donor and implementing agencies in the early identification of and appropriate response to GBV in complex humanitarian emergencies. This survey was conducted in East Timor.

  • Four Months On: A Snapshot of Priority Reproductive Health Activities in Haiti

    At the time of the assessment, four months after the January 12 earthquake, an estimated 2 million individuals remained displaced in settlement sites in earthquake-affected areas, including Port-au-Prince, Jacmel, Leogane, Petit Goave and Grand Goave. The Government of Haiti and humanitarian organizations have scaled up their response and contingency planning, particularly for food, water, health and emergency shelter with the advent of the rainy and hurricane season.The summary report is available in English, French and Creole, and the report for community participants, in English and Creole.

  • Meeting Needs for Reproductive Health Services in Post-Conflict Environments: CARE's Family Planning Project in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

    This case study highlights the mid-project impact of CAREs three-year Family Planning Project (FPP) in remote, war-torn Maniema province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The goal of the FPP is to reduce unplanned and unwanted pregnancies. After just 20 months of work with the Ministry of Health and civic organizations, the FPP shows an increase in the contraceptive prevalence rate from 1% to 9%, as well as other clear, positive results. This case study explores the FPP mid-project results and lessons learned on addressing family planning as an urgent need and integrating reproductive health care services as part of first tier-interventions implemented by health delivery systems during times of crisis and post-crisis.

    The report covers the findings of three Women's Refugee Commission field assessments to Egypt, Malaysia and Ethiopia coupled with the learning from a funded pilot project in Burundi as well as desk research and expert interviews. Key findings conclude that without economic opportunities, women resort to dangerous and desperate measures to provide for themselves and their families, often heightening their risk of sexual exploitation and abuse. However, when economic opportunities are provided without built-in protective elements, an increase in sexual violence outside the home and heightened domestic violence within the home often ensue.

    A study on the prevalence of multiple forms of gender-based violence (GBV) was undertaken by the Women's Wellness Center (WWC) in the Peja Region of Kosovo in August 2002. The design, implementation, and analysis of the research were the result of collaboration between the WWC and the Reproductive Health Response in Crises (RHRC) Consortium, with expert contribution from GBV researchers at Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the University of Arizona. The primary goal of the collaborative effort was to produce data for programmatic and policy use by the WWC.

    From May to August 2011, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Women's Refugee Commission, with technical assistance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), undertook a multi-country baseline study to document knowledge of family planning, beliefs and practices of refugees, as well as the state of service provision in select refugee settings in Djibouti, Jordan, Kenya, Malaysia and Uganda.   • Reproductive Health In Jordan: Two Year Follow-Up Report

    In June 2007, the Women's Refugee Commission conducted a field mission to Amman, Jordan to increase international awareness of the reproductive health (RH) needs of men, women and youth in the Iraqi crisis. A follow-up mission was conducted in October 2008 and again in November 2009 to identify progress and remaining gaps in RH programming and to continue to advocate for the implementation of priority and comprehensive RH services for Iraqi refugees.

    In February 2007, the Women's Refugee Commission and (UNFPA) conducted an assessment of the reproductive health situation in the Kitgum and Pader Districts of northern Uganda. A key finding was the lack of access to family planning services for the Districts' displaced women, men and youth. In June 2008 and in May 2009, Women's Refugee Commission staff followed up on the status of the original assessment report recommendations. The two-year follow-up mission focused primarily on the Acholi sub-region of Kitgum, Pader and Gulu Districts.

    The Long Wait: Reproductive Health Care in Haiti, draws on findings from an assessment of Haiti's reproductive health response in crisis and beyond. The report highlights persistent gaps in family planning and adolescent sexual and reproductive health, particularly in remote areas. In spite of deteriorating infrastructure and short-term funding cycles, a number of local initiatives offer promising approaches to fill reproductive health gaps.

    Reproductive health (RH) assessment among the conflict-affected populations of north- ern Uganda in February 2007. The assessment team visited the districts of Kitgum and Pader and also visited a youth center and clinic in Gulu. In general, the findings revealed that although some basic services were in place, many were sorely lacking.

    This survey collected population-based data on reproductive health (RH) indicators during the post-conflict/transitional years in Lofa County Liberia. The survey goal is to highlight the critical need to continue funding and building programs during a time when traditional humanitarian aid has ceased and development has not yet begun, leaving the population without essential public health services.
